E ME

If you have a question, the best way to reach me is by e-mail.  My e-mail address is j_baldwin55@hotmail.com   Otherwise I can be reached at home 859.341.0639 or by cell 859.750.9226.  I hope to have a land line temporarily installed at the Closson’s location this year.  I will keep you posted.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Yes, we will be at Clossons again this year…..the corner of 4th and Race in downtown Cincinnati.  We want to make certain that we have as few traffic issues as possible, so we have created  a separate time for large schools and for ‘newbies’…we never feel like we spend enough time helping the new schools fill out their forms.  We really want this to be a good experience for everyone!!!   Check the schedule for dropping off art.  If you have any questions or concerns we are here!!!!

2005 Portfolio Nominations Pay Off

Last year I decided to poll all of the Portfolio Nominees to see if their nomination translated into scholarship dollars.  I ask them if they told the college they were applying to that they had been nominated and if they had submitted a copy of their letter of congratulations to be place in their application file.  Only the students who are majoring in art and submitted information regarding their nomination are included in this list.  We believe that The Scholastic Art Awards nomination played a part in their receiving a scholarship.  We were not able to contact all of the nominees due to phone number changes.  The numbers below represent 18 of the 36 Portfolio Nominees.  One student indicated he received a Cincinnatus Scholarship, but did not know the dollar amount.

NEW RULES AND UPDATES

Every year I read over the entry forms to see if anything new has been added.  I will highlight those items in this newsletter.  I will also reiterate information which seems to be overlooked on a regular basis.  Please read and remember, we will enforce the rules.

Ø     Three drawings are     NO LONGER REQUIRED in Art Portfolios

Ø     High School Transcripts are… NO LONGER REQUIRED  in portfolios

Ø     Nominated Art Portfolios to the national competition are to be submitted as ELECTRONIC FILES

Ø     Additional scholarship opportunities through new participating institutions on the national level are listed on the portfolio entry information.

Ø     All portfolios must be submitted on the regional level in their original form; no slides and no disks or cds.

Ø     This year the awards presentation will occur at the end of the exhibit so we may award a ‘Viewer’s Choice Award.

Ø     Entry fees are $2 per individual entry and $10 per portfolio.  These fees will go up in 2008 to meet the national requirements for submission.

Ø     ART FROM PHOTOS:  Nothing should be submitted if it has been copied from a photograph, unless the photo was taken by the student.  If this is the case, the art work should be accompanied with the student’s photo.  If the photo is not included and there is a question about the originality of the piece, it may be subject to elimination.

REMINDERS

ü     Paintings on canvas get lost – because the entry forms fall off – please write the student and school name the stretcher with a Sharpie.  All other work must be additionally labeled on the back ( directly on mounting board) in case entry forms fall off.

ü     ALL pastel and charcoal drawings should be covered in acetate to prevent smudging or damaging someone else’s work.  If the work is matted, only the window of the mat needs to be covered in acetate.  This is done from the inside of the matt  The acetate should be cut about ½” larger than the window opening and taped to the inside of the mat.  I know acetate is expensive, but it is a consideration for all of the young artists’ works.  The cost will not be as much if only the window is covered.  We remove and do not replace paper that is placed between the mat and the piece.  So, that is NOT an acceptable alternative.

ü     PHOTO PORTFOLIOS – Please follow the directions in the entry information…..

ü     All 2D work should be backed with foamcore or corrugated cardboard AND it should be the exact same size as the mat or unmatted artwork AND it should be securely assembled so that there are no gaps.  Do not use loops of tape as they expand and the mat pulls away from the work.  Please be careful not to use an adhesive that touches the piece of art.  If the mat is longer than the backing, the mat will bow and the work may fall off the wall during the exhibition.

ü     SCHOOL ID NUMBERS – These are so helpful in returning work to the school……we want you to get back all of your work, so please number your entries as required..  Please see the directions for that!!  If you are new we will assign a number to you when you arrive.  So please make time to put numbers on your entries when you arrive.

ü     INVENTORY SHEETS – Please put your home or cell phone numbers on these sheets.  If I have to call you with a question, it is much easier to get a hold of you outside of school.

ü     SIZE AND WEIGHT RESTRICTIONS – Once again please review the rules found in the individual entry information concerning this issue.

THANKS TO SUMMERFAIR FOR 12 YEARS OF SUPPORT

I think everyone knows what a tremendous impact Summerfair has had on the arts in our community.  If you have a chance, please take time to thank them on their website at www.summerfair.org   We LOVE Summerfair!!!!!!

SUMMERFAIR SCHOLARSHIP

Each year, Summerfair, Inc. awards two local high school sophomores or juniors tuition for a summer class at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. Our goal for this program is to give students contemplating a career in art to spend an intensive period pursuing and practicing their art in a college atmosphere.

Winners are determined based on submission of an essay and one piece of their work. Applications become available each February and are due in mid-April. To receive an application when they are available, drop an note to summerfair@fuse.net.

WE LOVE KNOWLEDGEWORKS TOO

This year marks the 7th year of support from Knowledgeworks Foundation.  Once again they will be selecting work to ‘adopt’ and display in their downtown offices.  This is a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their work in another venue.  KnowledgeWorks frames the art and has a very nice opeing for students, their family and friends.  We look forward to this continued opportunity and to their selections this year.

ARTWORKS IS LOOKING FOR YOU

ArtWorks will once again send out information in the winners packets regarding their program.  I can’t say enough about all of the wonderful programs that ArtWorks provides to our young artists.  They are truly a gem in our community.  Please tell your students to take advantage of this incredible opportunity.  We also thank them for supporting us with the postage to send out this information.

STUDENTS DELIVERING WORK

Students are not permitted to deliver work without a teacher or another responsible adult.  If there is a problem with the entry forms, students are usually not prepared to correct mistakes.

KENTUCKY CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITION

"Students are invited to participate in the Congressional Arts Competition, An Artistic Discovery, which will be held in June 2006. The competition is open to high school districts living in Kentucky's Fourth Congressional District, which is represented by Congressman Geoff Davis. The winner of this competition will have his or her work displayed in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. Additional information on this competition will be provided at a later date."

NO EARLY BIRDS

Please follow the delivery directions….as far as arrival times go.  I arrive early to prepare for your arrival…..when I do not feel prepared for you, I sometimes get a little testy….I really do like smiling and breathing normally…..really!

          SCHOOL DROP OFF SCHEDLULE

10 AM – NOON       Sat or Sun                       Sycamore HS          Mother of Mercy

                                                                                          Stivers                   Mason

                                                                                          Oak Hills                Seton

3 PM to 4 PM         Sat or Sun                       New Schools

NOON – 3 PM        Sat or Sun                       Everyone Else

Let’s see how this works in getting people in and out with as little congestion as possible.  The 6 schools listed above usually have massive numbers of work to deliver, sort, etc.  If we can move all of their artwork in before everyone else arrives it may make for a more easy transition.  I also want to make sure the new schools have all of their paperwork filled out properly, so I have set aside a separate time for them.
